Marty Rathbun & Mike Rinder: The Copyright and Trademark Squirrels

Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder are two people who should know better than others the value of the Dianetics and Scientology trademarks, and how they are vital in keeping Scientology working.  That makes the trademarks a prime target for SP’s like Rathbun and Rinder.

Now they’re making up their own checksheets, choosing what issues to include and exclude, and even which parts of issues, and even re-writing the issues as squirrels will.  Rathbun and Rinder want to copy all Scientology materials and make them available “free” and encourage others to do so actively. They figure that coyly and covertly trying to abuse the “Fair Use” doctrine (and encouraging ample alterations of the issues in the process) will help them get around such.  And we already know how squirrelly Rathbun’s APPLICATION of the materials is.  While they speak of adherence to Scientology, their actions form an all-out assault on keeping it working.

LRH talked about it in RJ 38 of 31 December 1983:

“As you may know, a long time ago I made a free gift of all trademarks of Dianetics and Scientology to an independent non-profit corporation.  This was the Religious Technology Center.  I no longer own these marks. And RTC controls the licensing and use of all trademarks.  And here is how it is keeping Scientology working.

“Over the past year, the Religious Technology Center (RTC) has made great strides in protecting and ensuring the good usage of the trademarks of Dianetics and Scientology to get more people moving up the Bridge and to ensure that Keeping Scientology working is kept in internationally.”

Rathbun and Rinder also know there is a history of people trying to mount power grabs and take over the Church. And that the protective shield of Keeping Scientology Working is what foiled them each time.  So what are these two ex-staffers trying to do?

“The only way any such power crazy people can ever take over such organizations is to discredit management.  Now here is the grim joke.  The very people who were managing kept saying how awful Church management was!  And they were talking about themselves!  And after they were ousted, they followed the same line, still hoping to grab the Churches.” – LRH

It sounds like LRH was writing about Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder specifically.

Make no mistake. It’s not just Scientology they are working daily to destroy, it’s also LRH and his intentions, including his intentions with Orgs, Policy, Tech, the Bridge, and keeping it all working purely.

“Recent surveys have been done on public and one of the main things that they are interested in is ensuring that the squirrels get handled and off the lines.  RTC is the organization that is effectively doing this.  The response to RTC’s handling of the squirrels has been excellent.  The public detests them.” – LRH

The public do detest squirrels such as Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder, and their “public” are just a handful of other squirrels and supporters. Their efforts to covertly steal the materials is just another gambit in their squirrely game. And their power push is doomed.

“BUT, can a power push against the Church happen again? Well, only if you fail to turn your back on squirrels and demand on-policy actions and HCOB tech in all executives and if you support only those who work to keep Scientology working.  My earnest advice is: Only deal with or associate with those organizations licensed by RTC and auditors in good standing with the Church; Close your ears to false statements made by bad hats and thus really clear the planet.  Only then can such power pushes fail and note that not only every earlier power push but also that this last one did fail.  And look at the resulting stats and gains when it all came right again!” – LRH

While the Church is dedicated to KSW and is expanding at unprecedented levels and reaching more people than ever before, Rathbun and Rinder’s idea of Keeping Scientology Working is to debate which parts of the KSW issue itself should be honored, and which parts discarded. In practice, not a single point isn’t “violated” by them.  Why? Because they know, as LRH said above, that only by people insisting on KSW can such power pushes fail. KSW fully applied by actual Scientologists is the barrier that Rathbun and Rinder are so desperate to overcome.

“So forgive me for not managing the Church when it almost fell into hostile hands.  It all came out all right.  Why? Because real Scientologists made sure it did.  My faith was justified.”

And real Scientologists did it by Keeping Scientology Working. And that includes safeguarding the materials from squirrels and other bad hats such as Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder.
